In a disappointing turn of events for equestrian enthusiasts, the iconic Gatcombe Park’s Festival of British Eventing has been canceled for the upcoming season. Despite the fervent efforts of the organizing team, the prevailing economic climate has rendered the event financially unviable. Event Director, Peter Phillips, expressed his regret, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that The Festival, which has played a significant part in the British Eventing calendar since 1983, cannot run this year.” Phillips, whose family has been deeply involved in the event for four decades, acknowledged…

What is the meaning of eventing?
In brief, eventing is when riders and their horses compete in various disciplines across the sport that test the partnership, stamina, skill, ability, and fitness of both the horse and rider. It can often be referred to as a ‘horse trial’ and attracts many riders, from novices to professionals in the sport. The three standard disciplines include dressage, cross country, and showjumping. The level of the competition will decide the order in which discipline is taken. Riders will compete for a trophy, fulfillment, and for a share in a prize fund. The higher the level of competition, the more testing the event will become and the more money can be won. The sport is recognised and supported by worldwide brands such as Rolex, Land Rover, Mars Equestrian, and more.

This fund aims to help out in the event of cancellation/abandonment of equestrian eventing fixtures due to extreme and/or weather conditions and will reimburse members who had already entered the…

For only the third time in the 72-year history of the Pan American Games, Team Canada claimed Eventing gold at the 2023 edition in Quillota, Chile on Sunday. It was a real upset when Michael Winter (El Mundo), Colleen Loach (Fe Golden Eye), Lindsay Traisnel (Bacyrouge), and Karl Slezak (Hot Bobo) pinned the leading Americans back to silver medal spot when the Jumping course designed by Marina Azevedo – the first-ever female designer at the Pan Americans who will also set the tracks for Jumping later this week – proved…

Oliver Townend Recliams FEI No.1
British Eventer Oliver Townend has claimed the top spot in the FEI Eventing World Athlete Rankings with 504 points. A spot he takes from his fellow countrywoman, Rosalind Canter, who held the coveted position for just one month. Townend’s ascent to the summit of the rankings comes as no surprise for the Olympic gold medalist, who previously held the world’s number one ranking over a year ago. He temporarily relinquished his position to New Zealand’s Tim Price, who enjoyed an 11-month reign before being surpassed by Canter. “It is and…

It’s been a jam-packed day of competition at the BEDE Events Osberton International Horse Trials, with wall-to-wall cross-country action on the roster alongside the continuation of the Bennington Carriages National Carriage Driving competition and the culmination of four of our six hotly contested eventing classes. Agria Equine Lifetime CCI1* Four classes saw their finales unfold on Saturday, and the largest of those was the inaugural Agria Equine Lifetime CCI1*, which had 81 competitors come forward to the final phase. Both the showjumping course and the time allowed proved enormously influential,…

Agria Equine Lifetime CCI1* Osberton Ambassador, Simon Grieve, kept his grip on the CCI1* leaderboard with Make Believe, who took that top spot in the first day of dressage. Ros Canter Crowned Winner at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials
Eventing world number one, Ros Canter crowned a brilliant season by winning the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials for the first time, riding Alex Moody’s characterful 10-year-old Izilot DHI on Sunday, September 17th. Excitement was maintained until the very end when the overnight leaders, world champion Yasmin Ingham and Banzai du Loir, lowered the very last showjumping fence to drop to second place. Ros, who was the 2018 world champion, has had an incredible season, winning Badminton and the European title, but a victory at Blenheim has so far eluded her. The…
Class by Name, Class by Nature.
Under the beaming sunshine, the Defender Burghley Horse Trials arena once more witnessed a historic afternoon as Great Britain’s Oliver Townend is crowned the winner for his third time on board Ballaghmor Class. The 16-year-old Irish Sports Horse is no stranger to the hallowed turf of Burghley, having won here in 2017 as a fresh faced 10-year-old at his first five star, as well as notable results in 2018 and 2019, finishing second and third respectively. “He jumped as good as he’s ever jumped, what can I say about him?…
Tim Price Retains his Lead at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials.
After a day of the usual thrills and spills at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials, despite the shuffling leaderboard beneath him, New Zealand’s Tim Price remains on top. Adding eight time penalties to his overnight score to lie on 26.7, Tim’s breathing space at the top is somewhat diminished, to leave him without even a fence in hand over Oliver Townend and Ballaghmor Class going into tomorrow’s show jumping phase. “He’s shown his class again, he didn’t feel like the horse I’ve had around this place last year, but for…
A Record Breaking Day of Dressage at Defender Burghley Horse Trials
The familiar green and white stripes that adorn the stands of the Defender Burghley Horse Trials arena are no stranger to historic moments, and today just happened to be another one of those days. After 58 riders completed the CCI-L 5* event’s dressage test, it’s New Zealand’s Tim Price and Vitali that sit on top of the leader board with the best 5* score since comparable records began back in 1978, of 18.7 penalties. The 13-year-old Holsteiner gelding is no stranger to the hallowed turf of Burghley House, having finished…
Ros Canter Takes a Majority at Blair Castle
Ros Canter was again in a class of her own at Defender Blair Castle Horse Trials this weekend, beating herself by almost 10 penalties for first, second and fourth place finishes in the CCI4*S, on Izilot DHI, Rehy Royal Diamond and MHS Seventeen respectively. I’m absolutely delighted,” said Ros. I brought the horses up here to set them up for their autumn 4* long-formats; they are all at slightly different stages in their careers, but I’ve always found Blair to be a really good stepping stone in horses’ development. If…
Ros Canter in command at Blair Castle Horse Trials
Ros Canter’s fabulous run of form continues, this time at Defender Blair Castle Horse Trials. With three horses in the CCI4*S after the dressage phase in first, second and fifth, it looks set to be yet another promising run for Ros and her team. Her final ride, Izilot DHI, has a commanding lead after scoring 24.8: Izilot DHI is possibly the most talented horse I have ever sat on, but also the quirkiest. He’s taught me a huge amount, with some fabulous results but also a few little blips. He’s…
Burghley included as FEI confirms bidders for FEI World Championships 2026
The FEI has confirmed the shortlisted bidders for the FEI World Championships 2026, and to our delight, Burghley has been named as a prospective host for Eventing. The shortlist comprises five Organising Committees that have applied to host events in various disciplines, as follows: Burghley hosted the first-ever World Championship in eventing in 1966, but a World Championship has not been held in the UK since the 1974 Championships, which were also run at Burghley. Burghley Horse Trials Event Director, Martyn Johnson commented: With our long association with Championships, unbeatable parkland setting, huge loyal following and world-class course we know we can run a brilliant World Championship here, and very…
Can Ros Canter make it a Trebble at Defender Burghley?
The question on everybody’s lips right now is can British equestrian superstar, Ros Canter who won the Badminton and the European Championships this year, top off an exceptional 2023 with victory at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials as well? Ros, fresh from winning individual and team gold on her Badminton champion Lordships Graffalo at the Europeans in Normandy earlier this month, will instead ride Annie Makin and Kate James’s Pencos Crown Jewel at Defender Burghley (31 August-3 September). The Lincolnshire-based 37-year-old will face serious opposition from all four of Defender…

FEI Eventing Nations Cup™ 2023 Arville (BEL), written by Eleanore Kelly In a nail-biting cross-country finish, Germany claimed The FEI Eventing Nations Cup™ in Arville (BEL) by just 0.3 of a penalty over home side Belgium. Their victory was massively helped by a strong performance from Julia Krajewski, the individual gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics. The 34 year old was also the individual winner of the CCIO4* competition, after jumping a super double clear on her impressive nine-year-old Holsteiner stallion, Nickel 21. The Germans performed well as a team,…
