How Do the Two YuMOVE Horse Formulas Compare?

The standard and PLUS formulas contain several of the same ingredients, including glucosamine, MSM, hyaluronic acid, vitamins C and E, and the brand’s ActivEase® Complex.

According to YuMOVE, the PLUS formula contains 25% more glucosamine and MSM, and twice the amount of ActivEase® Complex, compared with the standard horse formula. ActivEase® Complex combines green-lipped mussel and hoki, a marine fish, as sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

A higher ingredient concentration does not, by itself, establish that a product will produce better results for an individual horse. When choosing between formulas, consider your horse’s existing diet, workload and health needs, with advice from your vet where appropriate.

Ingredients in YuMOVE Horse Joint Supplements

Understanding the ingredients can help you compare products. However, the natural role of a nutrient in the body should not be confused with proof that feeding additional amounts will improve joint health.

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is commonly included in equine joint supplements because of its relationship to compounds found in cartilage.

Research into oral glucosamine supplementation in horses has produced mixed results. Its inclusion in a formula should therefore not be described as a guarantee that the supplement will rebuild cartilage, prevent joint deterioration or improve mobility.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in synovial fluid, where it contributes to lubrication and cushioning within joints. It is included in both YuMOVE horse formulas.

That natural function does not, on its own, demonstrate that an oral supplement will improve joint lubrication in a particular horse. Avoid interpreting its inclusion as a treatment claim.

Vitamins C and E

Both formulas contain vitamins C and E, which have antioxidant roles in the body.

Their presence should be considered as part of the horse’s overall nutritional intake. It does not establish that the supplement will prevent exercise-related joint damage or improve performance.

ActivEase® Complex

YuMOVE’s ActivEase® Complex contains green-lipped mussel and hoki and provides marine-derived omega-3 fatty acids. The PLUS formula contains twice the amount of this complex compared with the standard horse formula.

Although marine-derived omega-3s have been investigated in equine joint research, evidence of benefits in horses with osteoarthritis remains limited and inconsistent. Their inclusion should not be presented as proof that a product treats inflammation, pain or arthritis.

MSM

MSM, short for methylsulphonylmethane, is a sulphur-containing compound commonly found in equine joint supplements.

Research specifically establishing its benefits for equine joint health is limited, and much of the available evidence involves formulas containing several ingredients. This makes it difficult to attribute any observed result to MSM alone.

Feeding YuMOVE to Horses

Both formulas are designed to be mixed into your horse’s daily feed. Follow the instructions on the current packaging for the appropriate product and your horse’s weight.

YuMOVE’s current online guidance recommends doubling the daily amount for the first month, unless switching from another YuMOVE Joint Care product. Check the label before feeding, as instructions and formulations can change.

If your horse receives other supplements or prescribed medication, discuss the combination with your vet. The manufacturer also advises checking with a vet when using its supplements alongside prescription medicines.

Powder can be convenient to add to a daily ration, although acceptance will depend on the individual horse.
