Great Britain won the inaugural FEI Eventing Nations Cup Final at Boekelo, finishing ahead of Germany after a closely fought showjumping decider in the Netherlands.

Katie Magee, Gemma Stevens and Yasmin Ingham delivered the three counting scores to secure victory on 84.4 penalties. Germany finished just 2.6 penalties behind on 87.0, while Ireland claimed third on 97.5.

Britain’s winning squad comprised Magee with Cushlas Indigo, Stevens with Cooley Park Muze, Ingham with Kinda Corvette and Kirsty Chabert with Classic VI. Chabert’s elimination during cross-country left the remaining three combinations to complete without the security of a discard score.

With every nation starting the Final on zero series points, the title came down to performances at Boekelo. The outcome remained uncertain until the closing rounds of Sunday’s jumping phase.

British riders hold their nerve in the final rounds

Stevens and Cooley Park Muze supplied a crucial clear inside the time, keeping Britain firmly in contention as Germany’s final combinations entered the arena.

Arne Bergendahl responded with a clear inside the time aboard Bronco NRW, maintaining Germany’s narrow advantage. However, two fences down for Christoph Wahler and Gainsbourg de Bedon handed the initiative to Britain.

Magee then delivered a quick clear with Cushlas Indigo, giving Ingham a fence in hand as Britain’s final rider.

Kinda Corvette lowered the first element of the combination at fence four, reducing that cushion. Ingham kept the remaining fences standing and finished with enough time in hand to secure the title.

Britain’s total of 84.4 was the lowest team score recorded in Boekelo’s FEI Eventing Nations Cup competition.

“I’m very proud of them all and the three horses here are all nine-year-olds, which is even more special and very exciting for the future,” said Britain’s Chef d’Equipe Philip Surl.

“It’s a unique event and now with Boekelo being a final, rather than just another leg of the Nations Cup, it’s changed the dynamic of the competition and the event has a real Championship feel.”

Julia Krajewski makes Boekelo history

Germany finished second despite producing a score that would have been sufficient to win any of the previous 13 editions of Boekelo’s Nations Cup competition.

There was individual success for Julia Krajewski, who won aboard Ero de Cantraie. Her third Boekelo title made her the first rider to achieve that milestone.

Germany’s Chef d’Equipe Dr Annette Wyrwoll praised the team’s performance.

“Our team was amazing, they all completed and it was a very good weekend for them at Boekelo which is such a special event,” she said.

Ireland overtake USA to claim third

Ireland worked their way up the standings across the weekend, progressing from fifth after dressage to fourth after cross-country before securing a podium finish.

Elizabeth Power and Dassett Fortune set the tone with a clear inside the time, completing on their dressage score and putting pressure on the USA.

Lauren Nicholson kept the fences standing with Landmark’s Jungle Gold, but two seconds over the time reduced the American advantage to just 0.5 penalties.

A rail for Ireland’s Padraig McCarthy and Kilroe Tiger briefly gave the USA more breathing room. However, jumping and time penalties for Jack Curtis and Luska Candy Clover moved Ireland narrowly ahead.

When Alexandra Knowles and Montpellier Scais lowered two fences, Ireland’s final rider, Susannah Berry, entered with two rails in hand.

Berry jumped clear with Strangford, adding only 0.4 time penalties to confirm Ireland’s third place. Their score of 97.5 was the nation’s lowest team total at Boekelo and secured their second podium finish at the event.

“We’re absolutely thrilled, we’ve come with a team of very young horses, our entire team are all nine-year-old horses, so that looks really bright for the future for them,” said Ireland’s Chef d’Equipe Sam Griffiths.

The USA finished fourth on 105.4. Belgium took fifth, followed by the Netherlands, Switzerland, France and Sweden.
