Willa Newton has dominated the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse classes at Aston-le-Walls International with horses, Obama, Cyperno MB Z and Cortada.
Talking about the British-bred Obama, whom she won the five-year-old class on, Willa Newton said:
“He’s a lovely horse, very easy to do. I’ve had the ride since February and taken my time with him, but it’s paying off. Having already qualified for the Burghley final at Vale View he is proving to be Mr Consistent.”
Obama made his affiliated debut in early June finishing third in a BE90Open at Epworth, and was again in the ribbons at Offchurch Bury.
In the same class, Willa also took third place on Cyperno MB Z who she sat on for the first time last week. Owned by Veronia Delicata and Cheryl Briscoe, Willa was quick to credit Cheryl for the horse’s performance as the person who has produced him. Willa’s rides were separated by Bella Innes Ker riding Mountgable Independent.
It was Cortada (pictured) who provided the four-year-old win for Willa. Bought from German Olympian Dirk Schrade, who Willa has trained with in the past, she said: “I had been looking for a youngster for a while, and Dirk sent me some videos of her. She arrived this time last year and we have taken things slowly. She will now have a couple of weeks off before we start preparing for Burghley.”
Annie Kirkham and He’s Mint took the runner up spot, with Eliza Bell on Conteh in third.
In total 21 nations will be represented over the event’s duration. Almost 350 combinations will contest the three international classes, one-, three- and four-star short format. A further 280 are set to run at novice level and 25 in the Olympic advanced.
The venue has been designed to offer excellent viewing opportunites of the cross country and showjumping for spectators. With so many of the world’s top riders competing, it’s the perfect time to get up close to these athletes; bring the family for a great day of world class sport.
