What Made AP McCoy Such a Success?

AP McCoy is one of the most successful jockeys of all time. In fact, he was so successful at horse racing that even though he retired a few years ago, he is still talked about often to this day. Who is AP McCoy?

Anthony Peter McCoy was born in 1974 and won his first race at the age of just 17. Since then he has gone onto ride in thousands of races over his two-decade career. He has a massive number of victories under his belt, with his victory count standing at more than 2000 above his nearest competitor – truly impressive!

He started racing in Ireland with Jim Bolger, which is where he won his first race aged 17. He was spotted at 19 by English horse racing trainers and soon took the leap to move there. He rode his first English horse racing season aged 19 and won a massive 74 races! It was only a year later that he won his first Championship Title. Impressive enough, but he managed to keep this title every year after that, breaking the record for Consecutive titles won. This was previously held by Peter Scudamore, with 7 victories, which seemed amazing at the time, but something that was smashed by AP McCoy.

AP McCoy’s Achievements

You might be impressed to know that AP McCoy was awarded an MBE in 2002, however, he was then given an OBE in 2010 and then went on to be knighted in 2016, honoured for his services to horse racing. His is a Guinness World Record holder for the most career jump winners and has an incredible 20 Champion Jockey titles under his belt.

There is no denying that since AP McCoy won his first race in Ireland at the age of 17, he has pushed to be a champion at every stage of his career. With so many wins, awards and accolades under his belt it really is no surprise that he is so renowned with horse racing circles.
