Lancashire’s equestrian community is celebrating as the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) secured a remarkable hat-trick at the 2026 Lancashire Tourism Awards. The Burnley-based equine rescue charity and visitor attraction took home three prestigious accolades, cementing its reputation as one of the county’s most distinctive destinations.

A Unique Visitor Experience
Winning Small Visitor Attraction of the Year acknowledges HAPPA’s dual role as a working equine rescue centre and a welcoming public destination. Guests can meet rescued horses and ponies, explore scenic countryside walks, and enjoy homemade fare at The HAPPA Café. Every visit directly supports the charity’s ongoing mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome equines in need.
Innovative Equine Education
The Experience of the Year award for HAPPA’s “Own a Pony Day” celebrates the charity’s hands-on approach to equine education. This popular initiative gives participants the chance to learn about horse care, grooming, and welfare in a supportive environment, promoting responsible ownership and building confidence and wellbeing among attendees.
Unsung Hero: Andy Black
Special recognition was given to Andy Black, Café Manager at The HAPPA Café, who received the Unsung Hero Award. Judges praised his leadership and commitment, noting his behind-the-scenes role in creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that has made the café a favourite destination for locals and visitors alike.
