Harry Meade’s Cavalier Crystal has won the Twemlows Burghley Scholarship for the fourth consecutive year following another strong performance at Defender Burghley Horse Trials.
The scholarship is awarded annually to the highest-placed British-domiciled mare finishing inside the top 20. Cavalier Crystal secured the honour after completing this year’s competition in 10th place.
Provided by Twemlows Stud Farm, the award includes two embryo transfers and is designed to support the breeding of elite British mares without interrupting their competitive careers.
Twemlows has presented the scholarship in partnership with Defender Burghley Horse Trials for the past 18 years. Previous recipients include leading event riders Mary King, Piggy French and Jonelle Price.

Embryo transfer allows a donor mare to be inseminated before the resulting embryo is transferred to a recipient mare, who carries the foal to term. This means mares competing at the highest level can be bred from without pausing their sporting careers.
Twemlows is home to one of the largest recipient mare herds in the country and provides a range of specialist equine reproductive services.
