Why choose a horse calmer?

You may be looking for an antidote to help calm a horse that suffers from stress, anxiety and nervousness, or something for excitability.

The time of year, age, breed, feed, fitness, health and routine can all affect your horse’s behaviour. A hot horse (one that may exhibit many of the points raised here) can be hard to handle, and dangerous so choosing a horse calmer that is effective and reliable is important.

Using a horse calmer when a horse gets stressed can be a temporary relief for you both. Stress can be triggered during particular situations where nerves are heightened such as competitions, travelling in the horsebox (which can often be scary for horses) or even a vet visit (yes, your equine friend is well aware an injection is looming!). In these types of situations, calming supplements can be an absolute godsend.

When else you may find a horse calmer suitable

Let’s take a look at some other situations where you may find a horse calming suitable:

  • You have a hot or excitable horse that needs to chill out
  • Your horse in general is highly anxious, not brought on by a particular situation
  • Your horse finds competing at competitions stressful and worrisome
  • Your horse has been moved to new surroundings and is struggling to cope with the change
  • During a period of box rest
  • Following a period of box rest when being turned out or walked in hand
  • Any time of the year bonfires and fireworks are likely to take place

No matter what the situation, It can be pretty stressful to watch your horse exhibit signs of distress. Many owners choose horse calming supplements to take the edge off and they can really make a difference when it comes to safe handling and riding.


They can also make your horse feel much more relaxed and at ease in their surroundings. Most calming supplements work in a similar way however the ingredients in the formulas vary enormously. This is why it is important to be in the know about what you’re feeding your horse. You certainly don’t want to make the situation worse for yourself.
