Racing Welfare Brecon Beacons challenge raises more than £42,000 for racing community
Nearly 100 people from across the British racing industry came together in South Wales to complete Racing Welfare’s annual Brecon Beacons 10 Peak Challenge, raising more than £42,000 to support the charity’s work with racing’s workforce and retirees.
The fundraising event, held on 5 July, saw participants tackle a demanding 22-mile route across the Brecon Beacons National Park, climbing 10 peaks including Pen y Fan and Corn Du.
Racing industry unites for annual charity challenge
Teams representing training yards, racecourses, studs, media organisations and racing businesses took part in the annual challenge, demonstrating widespread support for Racing Welfare, the industry’s dedicated charity.
Among those completing the route were Racing Welfare Chairman Nick Bannister, Sky Sports Racing presenter Josh Apiafi, racing commentator John Hunt, former jockey-turned-trainer Rhys Flint, jockey Adam Wedge, and teams from Newbury Racecourse, Epsom Downs Racecourse, Newsells Park Stud and Mount Coote Stud.
More than £42,000 raised for Racing Welfare
Fundraising remains open, but participants have already generated more than £42,000, with proceeds helping Racing Welfare continue supporting people working in British racing.
According to the charity, it provided support to more than 2,400 individuals during 2025, helping those facing injury, illness, financial hardship, bereavement, career changes and other personal challenges.
Nick Bannister, who completed the challenge himself, praised the commitment shown across the industry.
“Today’s turnout has been fantastic and demonstrates the strength of support for Racing Welfare across our industry.”
He described the event as physically demanding but said the sense of teamwork made it a memorable experience.
Support for racing’s workforce and retirees
Former trainer Harry Dunlop, who regularly supports Racing Welfare fundraising events, said the challenge highlighted the charity’s importance to the sport.
He praised the organisation of the event and the diverse mix of participants from across British racing, noting that Racing Welfare provides support to people throughout every stage of their careers and into retirement.
Annual challenge heads to the Peak District in 2027
The Brecon Beacons event forms part of Racing Welfare’s annual fundraising walking challenge, which takes place in a different location each year.
Following this year’s success in South Wales, the charity has confirmed the event will move to the Peak District in 2027, with registrations of interest already open for those wishing to take part.
