If you’re looking for a new no-fill turnout rug for your horse or pony this winter, you’ve probably already searched all the online stores. You will no doubt want to find the best rug to suit not only your horse, but budget too, but with so many out there, it’s hard to choose the right one.
There are a few other important points to consider, including material durability, fit, quality, kneck coverage (if any) and fittings to secure in place. However, perhaps the biggest consideration is waterproofing, as living in the UK we’re all too aware of unexpected showers (that weren’t visible on the weather app), hammering down mid afternoon and drenching our beloved equines.
Of course, no-fill turnouts can be used all year round, depending on the type of horse you have. The typical Thoroughbred may need one on all year round, whereas the heavier thick-coated cob may be able to use one over the winter. It’s a case of horses for courses (pun intended!).
So, with all the above points in mind, we’ve rounded up a few of the latest rugs for you to consider in your journey to buying your horse or pony’s next new rug.,

Tie-Dye Shires Tempest Lightweight Turnout Rug
We purchased one of these rugs a few years back, and it’s been very effective. Ours (with another design on) is now on its 3rd winter. We use it in early autumn, spring, and if it’s very wet during the summer.
All the usual rug features including a 600D outer, waterproof (water rolls off), fully lined, twin buckle front fastening, low fitting surcingles, tail flap and filet string.
There’s no wither protection and the breast area can fit quite high up, but the rug is waterproof and breathable.
Horseware Amigo Hero Ripstop Lightweight Turnout Rug
A lightweight turnout rug from Horseware Ireland, which is realistically priced and comes with a no-frill standard design.
The one nice added extra on this rug is the ability to add a kneck cover, with concealed bars just to the inside of the neck trim to attach one should you wish.
It features a 600 Denier outer, is fully waterproof, with a polyester lining, tail flap, filet string and a double breast huck fastening to the front.
Gallop Trojan Lightweight Turnout Rug
The Gallop Trojan rug is known for it’s reasonable price-tag, and with its prevalence in the stores – we’d be leaning toward saying quality too.
All the rugs in the range tend to feature a no-fuss look and fit, with the shoulder gussets a staple. The surcingles fit slightly higher up, and there’s a small wither padding too.
The rug has a nylon lining and is sold as Showerproof.
All-in-one! WeatherBeeta ComFiTec Plus Lightweight Turnout
This all-in-one waterproof and lightweight option allows to keep the neck dry too – we particularly like full necks for greys/cremellos as it saves on grooming time during the ‘muddy-field’ season.
The reflective strips help when bringing in when it’s dark (finding them in the dark too!). Strips are also helpful if you have to lead the horse up a lane.
The front secures with a double clip and buckle fitment to adjust, there’s memory foam wither protection, low cut surcingles, a tough 1200 Denier outer, high cut shoulder gussets that we find useful for horses with fuller shoulders, a tail flap and removable leg strips.
GS Equestrian 0G Turnout with Fitted Rug
GS Equestrian have their own range of rugs, and this one caught our eye as not only is it fully waterproof with a fitted kneck, but the entire range is budget friendly too! (This one £58.95 with a fitted full kneck).
Rugs come with minimal branding, and appear to be a typical design with a 600 Denier outer. There’s low fitted surcingles, a tail flap and a double buckle front fastening.
