Field licks are a great way to add a nutritional supplement and/or can act as a boredom breaker (enrichment) to your horse’s day. For horses that are on a low-sugar diet, due to the risk of laminitis or other health-related problems, molasses-free licks are now also available.

Field licks that include garlic are also recommended to help naturally repel flies. There are others that work on calming by providing essential ingredients known to ‘chill the horse out’.

You may choose to leave a couple in each paddock, depending on how many horses are turned out. Some, however, may attract unwanted pests such as flies. The licks that typically attract flies are often high in sugar. If this is the case, you may choose to leave it out overnight and remove in the morning.

Field shelters, posts and trees are ideal to use when hanging a field lick such as a salt lick. Somewhere that offers shade is a good option when it comes to placing a field lick in the paddock.

If grazing several horses together, it’s advisable to offer access to more than one lick. Position licks at a safe distance apart.
