Burgham International Horse Trials Entries Now Open

  • Owen Pugh Burgham International Horse Trials (27-30 July)

Entries are now open for the Owen Pugh Burgham International Horse Trials, Northumberland’s only international event.

As well as the established CIC3* and CIC2* classes, Burgham is holding a CIC* for the first time, which is expected to prove popular both with amateur riders wanting a taste of international competition – especially those aiming at Blair Castle’s CCI* in August – and professionals looking for a first international run for their young horses.

Burgham also hosts a wide range of national classes, from BE90 level to open intermediate.

The international and intermediate cross-country tracks will be designed by David Evans, who has recently been appointed course-builder for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, while former World and Olympic champion Blyth Tait will design Burgham’s novice, BE100 and BE90 courses.

Britain’s number one event rider, Oliver Townend, has already declared his intention to compete at Burgham.

“It’s a great event and I plan on bringing lots of horses,” said Oliver. “It is well organised, has a really good atmosphere and the courses are educational and horse-friendly.”

The Horse Trials also features Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse qualifiers and an excellent selection of British Showjumping classes, ranging from British Novice to the Burgham Classic 1.40m Grand Prix, for which there is £3,000 of prize-money on offer.

There is also a wide variety of trade stands, food stalls and children’s entertainment.

Event director Martyn Johnson said: “We are very proud that Burgham is becoming a real highlight of the summer equestrian calendar. We try hard to raise our game each year and to provide the best experience possible for competitors and their connections and for spectators.”

Burgham’s supported charity for 2017 is Daft As A Brush Cancer Patient Care.
