Over 300 Horses Rehomed in Ten Years by National Pet Charity
Blue Cross, a leading UK animal welfare charity, is celebrating a major milestone: ten years of its innovative Home Direct scheme, which has successfully helped more than 300 horses find new homes. The service offers a lifeline to owners unable to keep their horses, while ensuring animals are matched directly with new families—bypassing the need for charity centre stays.
How Home Direct Works
The Home Direct service is designed to make the rehoming process efficient and compassionate. Each horse is thoroughly assessed by a member of the Blue Cross horse unit team before being listed on the Blue Cross website. Once a suitable new owner is found, the charity arranges and oversees introductory visits to ensure a good match. If all goes well, the horse is rehomed—often within just a few weeks.
Real Stories: Neville and RT
The impact of Home Direct is best illustrated through the stories of horses like Neville and RT. Neville, a cherished Connemara pony, was rehomed earlier this year when his owner’s circumstances changed. Thanks to Blue Cross, Neville quickly found a new home as a companion, with his previous owner praising the charity’s supportive and efficient process.
RT, an Exmoor pony (picture) was among the first horses rehomed through Home Direct in 2015. After initial success in the show ring, RT’s family could no longer keep him due to life changes. Blue Cross matched him with a new family seeking a companion for their own pony. RT has since thrived in multiple loving homes, with his current guardian describing the process as supportive and reassuring.

Vicki Alford, Equine Centre Manager at Blue Cross Burford, emphasises the dual focus of the scheme: “Home Direct enables us to help people as much as we are helping horses. We encourage owners to reach out while their horses are healthy, ensuring the best possible outcome for both.”
