Tiny foal Mika finds safety and a new beginning at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary
A tiny foal who arrived at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary in need of urgent care is now thriving after being given a second chance at life.
Filly foal Mika arrived at the The Mare and Foal Sanctuary just a few weeks old after concerns were raised about her welfare. She was not receiving the essential nutrition she needed to grow and was living in an unsafe environment.
Now settled at Beech Trees, one of the Sanctuary’s specialist care sites near Newton Abbot, Mika is growing stronger every day and has already captured the hearts of the team caring for her.
Her care has included supplementary milk, nutritional support and close monitoring, with the veterinary team also identifying a heart murmur during routine checks. Further assessments will take place as she grows, but for now Mika is happy, comfortable and enjoying life with her new foal friend, Luna.
Beech Trees Horse Care Team Member Jade said:
“Mika is so calm and sweet. She was very shy when she arrived, but she’s now coming out of her shell, being inquisitive and running around her field and exploring things.”
The pair can often be seen playing together before settling down for naps in the sunshine.
Mika is also beginning her early handling training, learning about headcollars and building trust with her carers through gentle, positive sessions.
Georgina from the Beech Trees team said:
“She was so young and vulnerable when she arrived, and it’s great to feel we’ve been able to give her a good, positive start in life.”
The Sanctuary hopes that as Mika grows, she may eventually be suitable for rehoming, or could potentially become one of the charity’s equine partners supporting people through equine-assisted services.
For now, this tiny foal is simply enjoying the most important thing of all, a safe place to grow.
