Jonty Evans Regains Consciousness

Jonty Evans has regained consciousness after spending over a month in a coma.

Jonty fell at Tattersalls Horse Trails on June 3rd, from his ride Cooley Rorkes Drift, during the cross-country phase. Since the fall, he has been in a coma and is now being cared for at Connolly Hospital. Cooley Rorkes Drift, who was uninjured, has moved to Andrew Downes’ yard to be looked after and ridden whilst Evans continues to recover.

A statement, released on July 20th by Horse Sport Ireland, on behalf of the Evans family stated the rider’s improvement;

“We are pleased to report that over the past 10 days Jonty’s condition has continued to slowly improve.  Jonty has now regained consciousness and is beginning to interact positively with the medical team and his family.”

To gain strength, whilst his head injury improves Evans will be undergoing “physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions”, continuing into the foreseeable future.

The statement continued to read;

“Due to the need for Jonty to remain in a quiet and calm environment for a significant period of time, and to continue his recovery as privately as possible, the medical team have advised the family to keep visitors strictly to a minimum.”

The statement also thanked the ‘Eventing Community’ for the support, shown through the #WearGreenForJonty campaign;

“The family deeply appreciate all the actions, support and kind words that Jonty has received over the past weeks from the ‘Eventing Community’ – they have found this a great source of strength.”
