HorseWorld, the Bristol-based equine charity, has launched an ambitious bursary appeal to fund over 100 new places on its transformative Discovery programme for vulnerable children and young people by April 2026. The initiative, “Unlocking Discovery: The Bursary Appeal”, aims to address the urgent need for early intervention as SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) waiting lists continue to rise across Bristol, Bath and North Somerset.

Unlocking Potential Through Equine-Assisted Learning

The Discovery programme offers a unique six-week, one-to-one equine-assisted education experience. Specially trained rescued horses and expert educators help participants build confidence, improve communication, and re-engage with learning outside the classroom. Since its launch in 2008, the programme has supported over 3,000 children and young people struggling with mainstream education or facing significant disadvantage.

Growing Demand Amidst Funding Shortfalls

With local authority funding shrinking and SEND assessment delays worsening, more at-risk children are missing out on crucial early support. HorseWorld reports that this term alone, 12 young people had their funding withdrawn just days before starting the programme. Thanks to a generous donor, five were able to proceed, but seven remain on the waiting list.

Backed by Lord Rees of Easton, former Mayor of Bristol, HorseWorld hopes to fund at least 100 new bursaries by April 2026. Each bursary covers a six-week placement, costing £2,000 per child. For those without an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), the charity must raise the full amount through donations.

Proven Results and Urgent Appeal

Recent surveys show 99% of referrers observed improved confidence, and 97% saw better communication in children completing the Discovery programme. HorseWorld CEO, Jo Coombs, emphasises the importance of early intervention:
“These bursaries literally unlock Discovery for children who would otherwise be left waiting. They unlock something far greater—a sense of confidence and connection that can last a lifetime.”

HorseWorld has expanded its capacity with more staff and trained horses, enabling more young people to access support within weeks, rather than waiting years for assessments.
