Betting on Christmas Horse Racing in 2026 With Britain’s New Four-Day Schedule

Christmas racing in Britain looks different this year. The British Horseracing Authority signed off changes to the Christmas fixture schedule in July, and the upshot is straightforward. ITV gets four days of racing on the bounce, running from Boxing Day to 29 December. Kempton Park, Chepstow and Newbury all backed the changes, with Racecourse Media Group brokering the talks.

For years, Kempton and Chepstow went head to head on 27 December, leaving racegoers, trainers and television viewers to split their attention. With the two meetings now on different days, the ante-post markets, race-day odds and horse racing bets on Kempton’s second card and the Welsh Grand National no longer have to share a single afternoon of jump racing.

Four Consecutive Days of Festive Racing

Boxing Day starts things off at Kempton Park with King George VI Chase Day, while Aintree and Wetherby fill out the television schedule. Kempton returns on Sunday 27 December for Kauto Star Chase Day. Wetherby races again that afternoon, along with Hereford, whose meeting was moved from 8 December to bolster ITV’s coverage.

Bank Holiday Monday belongs to Chepstow and the Welsh Grand National, with Leicester in support. Newbury closes the run on 29 December with Challow Hurdle Day, and Doncaster adds races to the broadcast.

Boxing Day and the King George VI Chase

The King George is still the race most fans circle in December. It dates from 1937. Three miles, Grade 1, and for staying chasers in Britain nothing bigger comes along until the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. Kauto Star won it five times, the last of those in 2011. Desert Orchid managed four. The 2025 running went to The Jukebox Man, ridden by Ben Jones.

Kempton’s Boxing Day card has a second Grade 1 as well, the Christmas Hurdle over two miles. Results in these two races often shake up the Cheltenham Festival markets. That is worth remembering before taking an early price, because an ante-post bet on a horse that does not run is normally lost unless the bookmaker offers non-runner no bet.

27 December and the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase

The Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase moves to the second day of the meeting under the new layout. Run over three miles and named after the five-time King George winner, it can be a tricky race to call. These horses are still learning their trade over fences. A clumsy jump can cost a horse the race in a stride, which is why the way it jumped last time is often a better guide than the result.

Welsh Grand National Moves to Bank Holiday Monday

Chepstow took over the Welsh Grand National in 1949, and the £170,000 race has a new slot for 2026 on Bank Holiday Monday. Nothing else about it has softened. Expect roughly three miles and six and a half furlongs, very often on soft or heavy going, with stamina found wanting over the final half-mile.

Look at the trial. Secret Reprieve won it on the way to the 2020 Welsh National, and Iwilldoit followed exactly the same path twelve months later. Ground at Chepstow can change overnight in late December too, so a fresh look at the going on raceday morning is never wasted.

Big fields make it a natural each-way race. Under standard terms, handicaps with 16 or more runners pay four places at a quarter of the odds. Plenty of bookmakers go further and offer extra places on major handicaps, so place terms are worth comparing.

Challow Hurdle Day at Newbury

Newbury finally has the date it wanted. The Challow Novices’ Hurdle now has a permanent place on 29 December, something the course had been pushing for. It’s a Grade 1 for novice hurdlers over two and a half miles or so, with ten flights in all. Paul Nicholls has a fine record in it. Denman, Bravemansgame and Stage Star all won it for him before going on to Grade 1 success over fences.

Novice form needs handling with care. Plenty of these horses have run only a handful of times, so there isn’t much to go on, and the market tends to react sharply to whispers from the yard or news on the day. Final declarations are worth a look before any bet goes on.

Practical Tips for Festive Betting

Then there’s the weather. A hard frost or a waterlogged track can mean an inspection, sometimes an abandonment, because the safety of horses and riders comes first. Welfare is a theme British racing pushes hard through its HorsePWR equine welfare campaign. Big races do get moved when the weather turns. The Long Walk Hurdle, normally an Ascot race, was run at Kempton in 2022 after frozen ground wiped out the original meeting.

Late withdrawals matter too. If a horse comes out after a market has formed, fixed-odds winnings can be cut by a Rule 4 deduction, scaled to the non-runner’s price.

With four big days of racing in a row, it helps to set a budget before Boxing Day and stick to it until the Challow Hurdle is over.

Four Days of Festive Jump Racing

From the King George on Boxing Day to the Challow Hurdle on 29 December, the new schedule gives British jump racing a proper festive run, one meeting at a time. With each card on its own day, there is more time to study the form and keep an eye on the ground.
