Rio 2016 Paralympic Games Fifth spot qualified for Great Britain
The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) have confirmed that Great Britain has achieved an individual qualification spot (unnamed) for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The news means that GB will be represented by five athletes in para-equestrian dressage out in Brazil this summer, with four competing in the team competition and one athlete who will compete solely as an individual.
Since the World Championships in 2014 the GB squad has been working hard on their strategic competition planning, with all athletes fully focussed on supporting each other to achieve the best possible results for Great Britain.
Performance Manager, Sarah Armstrong commented; “This is a result of the entire team’s hard work, not only from the athletes but the grooms, coaches and support staff. None of this would be possible without the backing of our loyal owners and the support the World Class Programme receives from the National Lottery and Government via UK Sport. I am delighted that we are going to be able to take a squad of five athletes out to Rio to try and defend the team gold medal the team won at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.”
The announcement of which equestrian athletes will head out to compete at the Games will not be made until later in the year.
