British Eventing and The Howden Way celebrate outstanding horsemanship and sportsmanship
British Eventing, in partnership with The Howden Way, has announced Sophie Feeney as the recipient of the February 2026 Spotlight Award. This monthly accolade honours individuals who embody the core values of horsemanship, athlete wellness, and community spirit within the eventing world.
Sophie, nominated by East region coach Emily Lochore, was selected from a shortlist by Olympic Gold Medallist Laura Collett. Praising Sophie’s maturity and horse-first approach, Collett commented, “Ambition is important in our sport, but knowing when to put your horse first is what truly defines a great rider. Choosing to prioritise her horse’s confidence and wellbeing over moving up the levels shows real horsemanship. That kind of decision-making builds long-term partnerships and, ultimately, long-term success. It’s exactly the mindset we want to celebrate and encourage.”
Coach Emily Lochore added, “Sophie works incredibly hard and has consistently shown her commitment, not only in training but through representing the youth teams over a number of years. Recently, she really demonstrated the kind of horsewoman she is becoming. As much as she’s ambitious and keen to move up the levels, she recognised that her horse is happiest and most confident where he is right now, and she chose to prioritise that, deciding to focus on enjoying the experience instead. That takes maturity. It shows just how thoughtful, kind and horse-centred Sophie is in her decision-making.”
On receiving the award, Sophie shared, “I’ve just celebrated three years with Lynskey and he really is a true all-rounder. I ride for Essex & Suffolk Pony Club and have been proud to represent the BE East region at the U18 BE80 Championships and, last year, at the U18 BE90 Championships. He also loves a day out hunting, which makes him such a fun and versatile horse. One of the things I enjoy most about being part of British Eventing is meeting other members and taking part in the training opportunities BE East offers. I recently attended a fantastic session with Caroline Powell at her top-class facilities, which was such a valuable experience. This season, I’m hoping to qualify again to represent the U18 East region. I may step up to BE100, but will mainly focus on BE90 and building from there.”
The eventing Spotlight Award is open to Grassroots (80-100) BE members and is designed to recognise those who prioritise horse welfare, support a collaborative and inclusive environment, focus on personal growth, and act as positive role models.
