Historic British Representation

Britain made history by qualifying all four team members for the individual final – a feat matched only by Germany. The championship concluded with 25 combinations competing across two rounds to determine Europe’s individual medallists.

Round One Excellence

Donald Whitaker’s Championship Debut

Donald Whitaker and Millfield Colette delivered another masterclass performance, securing a crucial clear round despite touching fence 10. The striking grey mare, who has won hearts throughout the championship, demonstrated her championship credentials once again.

“Colette jumped her heart out again – she’s absolutely fantastic,” said Whitaker. “I think the course actually walked more difficult than it’s riding.”

Jessica Mendoza’s Steady Rise

Jessica Mendoza continued her impressive championship journey with In The Air, delivering another faultless round. The pair’s consistent improvement saw them climb from 45th after day one to secure their place in the final 12.

“She was incredible. She’s really shown me that she’s a championship horse,” said Mendoza. “This week, she’s really filled me with a lot of confidence.”

Ben Maher’s Precision

Ben Maher and Dallas Vegas Batilly produced another textbook performance, demonstrating supreme balance and rhythm throughout their clear round. The partnership’s consistency across all championship rounds highlighted their world-class status.

Scott Brash Under Pressure

Scott Brash faced the ultimate test with Hello Folie, a 10-year-old mare in her first championship. Despite a heart-stopping moment at fence five, where the mare’s incredible scope nearly caused issues with the back rail, they secured their passage to the final round.

“I’m delighted with Folie yet again,” said Brash. “She showed her class and what a great horse she is.”

Final Round Drama

All four British riders qualified for the decisive second round, comprising 25% of the 12-strong field – an unprecedented achievement.

British Final Standings:

  • 11th: Donald Whitaker and Millfield Colette (clear round)
  • 12th: Jessica Mendoza and In The Air (4 penalties)
  • 4th: Ben Maher and Dallas Vegas Batilly (clear round)
  • 2nd: Scott Brash and Hello Folie (clear round)

Championship Medal Ceremony

The individual medals were decided after intense competition:

  • Gold: Richard Vogel (Germany) and United Touch S (0.01 penalties)
  • Silver: Scott Brash (Great Britain) and Hello Folie
  • Bronze: Gilles Thomas (Belgium) and Ermitage Kalone

This marks Germany’s 16th individual European Championship title, achieved on the lowest finishing score ever recorded. For Scott Brash, it represents his first individual European silver medal, adding to his 2013 bronze from Herning.

Hello Folie’s Remarkable Journey

The 10-year-old mare’s championship debut has been nothing short of sensational. Competing in her first year at CSI5* level, Hello Folie delivered five consecutive clear rounds across the championship – a feat that showcases both her talent and Scott’s masterful riding.

“She’s an incredible, incredible mare,” reflected Brash. “Even in the warm-up, I felt she was a bit tired, but she still goes into the ring and gives her absolute all. What an incredible mare!”

Team Performance Summary

Britain’s championship campaign yielded exceptional results:

Performance Manager Di Lampard’s squad has demonstrated the depth and quality of British showjumping, with both established stars and emerging talent delivering on the biggest stage.

Looking Ahead

The championship success sets up exciting prospects for future competitions, with several riders expressing ambitions for next year’s World Championships in Aachen. Donald Whitaker particularly highlighted this as a “dream come true” target for Millfield Colette.
