Teenager Theo Charnley and his beloved rescue pony, RSPCA George, are celebrating another milestone after being shortlisted for the Horse & Hound Awards 2026 Unsung Partnership of the Year.

The remarkable pair have come a long way since first meeting six years ago, building a special bond that has taken them from dressage championships to international success in carriage driving. Theo, 14, from Shropshire, was just eight when his family adopted George from the RSPCA’s Gonsal Farm Equine Centre in Dorrington, near Shrewsbury. Born in RSPCA care, George was only three years old when the pair first met.

At the time, Theo had never ridden a horse and was frightened of them, despite his dad, Paul, having some experience with horses. However, during the Covid-19 lockdown, Theo told his dad he wanted to try riding. The family soon discovered George, and it was the beginning of a very special friendship.

A bond that built confidence

Paul said people thought the family were taking a big risk by considering a pony for a child who had never ridden and was nervous around horses. George was young and a little nervous himself, but the connection between the pair was immediate.

“As soon as he saw George, Theo was beaming. I knew straight away they were going to have a special relationship,” Paul explained.

With George by his side, Theo gradually grew in confidence, both in and out of the saddle. What began as an opportunity to try riding developed into an impressive competitive career.

Together, Theo and George went on to win an incredible 26 national dressage championships. In 2024, they also represented England as part of the winning Home Nations squad.

Paul believes their achievements reflect the trust they have built over the years.

Theo had always been quite shy, but his dad says he has become much more confident through his relationship with George. He is now happy to chat to people about his pony and share their experiences.

At home, George is known for being playful and cheeky, but Paul says he becomes dependable and focused when it is time to compete.

Finding a new way to compete together

As Theo grew older and taller, he eventually became too big for George to continue their dressage journey in the same way. Although the family received offers from people hoping to buy the talented pony, Theo was determined not to leave his best friend behind. Rather than move on to a bigger horse, he decided to explore a completely different discipline: carriage driving.  The transition presented new challenges, but the pair quickly found their feet. Since taking up the sport last year, they have won three national carriage driving championships, secured an international victory for Team GB and achieved further international podium finishes.

George also made history by becoming the first RSPCA pony registered with the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) to win an international competition. The duo are also believed to be the first from their county to represent it in two different equestrian disciplines: dressage and carriage driving.

One of Theo’s favourite ways to prepare for competitions is to sit with George and read aloud the instructions for their driving test. Reading helps Theo remember the route and relax before competing, while he is convinced George listens and remembers it too.

It is a sweet example of the connection that has helped them succeed together.

Championing rescue ponies

Theo is proud of George’s achievements and is passionate about showing what rescue animals can accomplish when given the opportunity. He chose to compete under the name RSPCA George, ensuring the charity’s name is recognised alongside their success on the national and international stage.

Theo has since adopted two more ponies from Gonsal Farm: Jerry in 2024 and Elvis in 2025. He used his competition winnings to help fund their adoptions. Jerry was rescued after being found abandoned in a shipping container in a field, while Elvis came from a stud in Wales before being rescued by the RSPCA. Both ponies have since enjoyed success with Theo in showing and dressage.

An RSPCA spokesperson praised Theo’s achievements and highlighted the many horses and ponies in the charity’s care who are waiting for suitable homes. The spokesperson explained that seeing rescued horses develop into happy companions and successful competition animals can be incredibly rewarding. Rehoming also frees up space for other horses in need of the charity’s help.

How to support Theo and George

The Horse & Hound Awards celebrate outstanding achievements across the equestrian world, including the special relationships between people and animals.

Theo and George’s nomination recognises not only their impressive competition record, but also the trust, determination and friendship that have carried them through different stages of their journey.

Theo summed up their partnership simply: “George is my everything.”

He added that he was proud of how they had helped change people’s perceptions of rescue ponies, proving that animals given a second chance can go on to achieve extraordinary things.

Voting for the Unsung Partnership of the Year Award closes at 5pm on Friday 16 October 2026. Supporters can visit the official Horse & Hound Awards voting page to cast their vote for Theo and RSPCA George.

Their story is a wonderful reminder that success is not always about moving on to the next horse or chasing the biggest prizes. Sometimes, the greatest achievements come from sticking together, believing in one another and giving a rescue pony the chance to shine.
