Redwings Trustee Finishes Tough 100km Challenge
Redwings Trustee Completes Gruelling 100km Lake District Ultra Challenge to Support Horse Sanctuary
A dedicated trustee of Redwings Horse Sanctuary has demonstrated remarkable endurance and commitment by completing a 100km ultra-walking challenge across the rugged terrain of the Lake District, raising funds for the charity that rescues and cares for horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules in need.
Ian Scott, aged 70, who has served on Redwings’ Board of Trustees for four years, took part in the Ultra Challenge Series event over the weekend of June 7th and 8th. Battling challenging weather conditions, including relentless rain, wind, and steep hills, Ian finished 18th out of 38 competitors, completing the course in an impressive 22 hours, 28 minutes, and 5 seconds.
The event started and finished in Kendal, with participants required to complete the demanding 100km course within 24 hours. Known for its picturesque but tough landscapes, the Lake District pushed competitors to their limits — and Ian was no exception.
Reflecting on the challenge, Ian said:
“There was pain, laughs, tears – and pies at 2.15am! This challenge really had it all, but I finished in a time of 22:28:05 and probably the fastest of the old geezers.
“When it rains in the Lakes, it really rains, and the uphill paths turned into streams. The wind was a real struggle too.”
Ian acknowledged the vital support he received from his wife Alice, who met him at the halfway point with a change of clothes, rehydration drinks, and much-needed encouragement. He also credited friends, fellow Redwings supporters, and donors who kept him motivated, despite missing his usual ultra-walking partner, Mike.
The funds Ian has raised will go directly towards supporting Redwings’ vital work. The charity currently cares for over 1,300 equines annually, offering rehabilitation and sanctuary for animals often rescued from neglect, abandonment, or abuse. Redwings also runs educational programs to promote responsible horse care and welfare across the UK.
Ian added:
“I am so close to my £2000 target, and it would be so wonderful to achieve that, so please do donate if you’re able. Every penny goes towards the horses, ponies, donkeys and mules Redwings rescues.”
The 100km ultra challenge is just one of many fundraising events that supporters can take on to help Redwings continue their work. The charity encourages anyone inspired by Ian’s achievement to get involved. Fundraising packs and more information are available on the Redwings website.
For those interested, Ian’s Just Giving page remains open for donations.
