Ombudsman storms to British Champions Stakes victory
Ombudsman powered to an impressive three-and-three-quarter-length victory over Calandagan in the British Champions Stakes (G1) at Ascot on 17 October, boosting his claims as a leading contender for the Breeders’ Cup.
Trained by John and Thady Gosden for Godolphin, the five-year-old secured another automatic qualification for the $5 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), having already earned a place through his Prince of Wales’s Stakes victory earlier this year.
He also holds a qualification for the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) following his Dubai Turf success in March.
Ridden by William Buick, Ombudsman settled comfortably in third as stablemate Devil’s Advocate set the early pace. Buick made his move with two furlongs remaining, drawing alongside Calandagan as the defending champion launched his challenge. Ombudsman proved too strong, surging clear to win by three and three-quarter lengths. Calandagan finished second, with Bay City Roller a further one and three-quarter lengths behind in third.
The result reversed the outcome of the 2025 renewal, when Calandagan defeated Ombudsman before going on to be named the Longines World’s Best Racehorse.
Bred in Ireland by James Hanly, Ombudsman is a son of Night Of Thunder and has enjoyed a superb 2026 campaign, winning four of five starts, including three Group 1 races.
The Breeders’ Cup World Championships take place at Keeneland on 30–31 October. However, the $5 million Turf presents a new test for Ombudsman, with its one-and-a-half-mile distance exceeding the longest trip he has previously tackled.
Whether Godolphin sends him to Kentucky remains to be seen, but his commanding Ascot performance has underlined his class and made him a horse to watch as the international season reaches its climax.
