Horse of the Year Show will once again adopt its revised judging format for 2026, confirming an international and diverse panel of officials while withholding section allocations until the eve of each final.

The approach, which was first introduced following positive feedback from competitors and stakeholders, is designed to reinforce fairness, transparency and confidence among those competing in the iconic ‘arena of dreams’.

Judges representing Australia, Canada and Ireland will be among those officiating at the Championships, with allocations announced only on the evening before each final. Organisers say the format reflects the evolving nature of the sport and ensures all competitors enter the ring on a level playing field.

Focus On Fairness And Transparency

By delaying the release of judging assignments, Horse of the Year Show aims to remove any perceived advantage or bias, while still maintaining a world-class judging standard across all sections.

Alongside the judging format, organisers have reiterated that horse welfare remains paramount, encouraging competitors to familiarise themselves with the HOYS Rulebook and competition requirements ahead of the event.

Competitors who believe there may be a potential conflict of interest with a judge are advised to submit details, along with any supporting evidence, to entries@grandstand.co.uk prior to the show. Clear procedures are in place to ensure any concerns are reviewed and managed appropriately.

Emma Williams, Event Director, said the return of the format reflects strong competitor support.

“We received an abundance of positive feedback when we introduced this judging format previously, and it was clear that competitors valued this fresh approach. By confirming a world-class panel while withholding individual allocations until the finals, we are able to maintain transparency and ensure every competitor enters the arena with confidence in the process.”
