Bow Echo Extends Unbeaten Record with Sussex Stakes Triumph at Glorious Goodwood
Bow Echo cemented his position as one of Europe’s leading milers with a determined victory in the Group 1 Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday, overcoming a troubled passage to maintain his unbeaten record and secure a place at the 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
The George Boughey-trained three-year-old, ridden by Billy Loughnane, once again found himself in a thrilling duel with familiar rival Gstaad before producing a devastating late burst to win by half a length. Opera Ballo, who briefly looked the likely winner entering the final furlong, stayed on to finish third.
Making his first start against older horses, Bow Echo was forced to bide his time after becoming boxed in behind runners through much of the race. With Gstaad also making his first appearance against older opposition, the pair fought out another memorable finish before Loughnane finally found daylight, allowing the unbeaten colt to show his trademark turn of foot in the closing stages.
The victory was Bow Echo’s sixth from as many starts and completed a remarkable Group 1 treble following earlier successes in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. According to Racing Post, the victory also made him the first horse since Frankel to complete that prestigious Group 1 treble in the same season.
As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re In, the Sussex Stakes victory earned Bow Echo an automatic starting place in the US$2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (Grade 1) at Keeneland on 30-31 October. The Challenge Series awards winners of designated races an automatic berth, with entry fees paid, into corresponding Breeders’ Cup World Championships races.
According to a report published by Racing Post, trainer George Boughey believes the Breeders’ Cup is now the colt’s primary end-of-season target.
“He really showed all of his attributes today. He’s a star, he’s got an amazing mind and he looks the complete racehorse at the moment. We’d like the horse to end up at the Breeders’ Cup.”
Wednesday’s performance further underlined Bow Echo’s growing reputation as one of the outstanding horses of the current Flat season, confirming his class against older rivals for the first time and strengthening his credentials ahead of a potential international campaign later this year.
Attention at Goodwood now turns to Thursday’s Markel Magnolia Cup, one of the festival’s most anticipated charity races. Featuring an inspiring line-up of women from across sport, business, media and the arts, the all-female contest raises vital funds for charitable causes while providing one of the highlights of Glorious Goodwood.
