Top combinations shine in opening dressage phase at Devon’s premier event
The opening day of competition at the Bicton International Horse Trials saw top contenders lay strong foundations in the dressage arena, as the event got underway yesterday in the scenic grounds of Bicton Arena. Running from 22–25 May, the event is hosting elite competition across the CCI2-L, CCI3-L, CCI4*-S**, and the British Young Rider National Championships.
In the premier TopSpec CCI4-S*, Laura Collett and her experienced partner Dacapo set the early pace with a dressage score of 24.8. The 16-year-old gelding, owned by Gillian Morris-Adams, Diana Chappell, Carolyn Taylor, and Mr & Mrs Smedley, continued the strong form that saw him win at Thoresby earlier in the season.
“I am very happy with both horses in the CCI4-S. Dacapo has always loved coming to Bicton and he’s an older horse who knows his job, so it makes my life easier!”* said Laura Collett, who also holds third place with Hester on 27.9.
Mark Davidson and Fonbherna Lancer finished the day in second with 26.9, setting up a closely contested leaderboard.
Rising Stars in the British Young Rider Championship
In the British Young Rider National Championships, sponsored by Succeed, Elizabeth Barratt delivered a standout performance on Big Boss Melo, scoring 28.3 to take the overnight lead.
“I was really pleased with him in the dressage. He’s quite a sensitive horse and we’ve been working hard on our flatwork so it’s great to have a solid start to the competition. He’s an incredible jumper so I can’t wait to take him cross country on Saturday,” said Elizabeth.
Close behind on 28.5 is Holly Clarke with Nico, ensuring the competition remains tight heading into the next phase.
Leaders Emerge in CCI3*-L and CCI2*-L
Ros Canter, fresh off her Badminton win, continued her run of form with the 8-year-old Silvesters Finesse to lead the Symonds & Sampson CCI3-L* with 25.1. The chestnut mare, affectionately known as Nessie, is owned by Deborah and Fergus Langstaff and has already achieved four top-ten finishes this season.
In the Equilume CCI2-L*, Tom McEwen topped the leaderboard riding Brookfield Danny De Muze, scoring 27.5 on the horse’s debut at this level. Jason Wood and Nitor sit just one point behind on 28.5.
Spectator Highlights and Family Attractions
The event also promises a packed weekend of family-friendly entertainment. Visitors can look forward to live stunt performances from the Knights of Middle England, the popular family dog show, and a demonstration by 2024 Crufts Champion Lorna Hayes and her dog Nora. Children aged 12 and under can attend for free.
