A new inhalation system for horses uses Aerogen technology developed for human healthcare, with a focus on consistent performance for regular use.

WLA Health & Care AG has launched the BIBO Pulmifier® Equine, an inhalation system that turns liquid medication into a fine mist for horses to breathe in.

Available across Europe from 15 October 2026, the device has been developed through a strategic partnership with Irish medical technology company Aerogen®. Its core technology is already used to deliver inhaled medication to patients in hospitals, including intensive care settings.

For horse owners, riders and yard professionals managing regular inhalation treatment, the aim is straightforward: a device designed to deliver consistent performance, day after day.

How does it work?

The BIBO Pulmifier Equine uses vibrating mesh technology. This involves a precision-made mesh that vibrates at a very high frequency, turning liquid medication into tiny airborne droplets, known as an aerosol.

The horse breathes in this mist through a mask, which has an integrated chamber designed to deliver the aerosol directly to the nostrils. The mask was developed with veterinarians.

According to the supplied specifications, the aerosol has a volume median diameter of 3.5 micrometres, a measurement of droplet size. Some 73.3% of droplets measure between 1 and 5 micrometres. These figures describe the mist produced by the device, rather than the amount of medication reaching a horse’s lungs.

Designed for regular use

WLA says one nebuliser, the component that turns the liquid into a mist, can deliver up to 2,000 doses with consistent performance.

At one dose per day, that would represent approximately five years of use. The company also states that there are no device-specific follow-up costs during this period.

The system is battery-powered and cordless, so it does not need to remain connected to an external power supply during use.

To set it up, users connect the nebuliser to the controller, attach the controller to the mask and start treatment.

The controller has an IP44 protection rating. This means it is protected against solid objects measuring 1mm or larger and splashes of water from any direction.

A partnership between human and equine healthcare

Aerogen has more than 25 years’ experience in aerosol drug delivery. According to the companies, its technology has supported the treatment of more than 30 million respiratory patients in 80 countries.

The partnership brings that technology into an equine system designed for use in the stable.

Armin Probst, CEO of WLA Health & Care AG, said:

“For many years, I worked towards making a technology available to horses that is as reliable as human medicine. Seeing this become a reality makes me incredibly proud. The collaboration with Aerogen® – a proven leader in aerosol drug delivery – has made this product a reality. For me, it is the fulfilment of a long-held goal.”

Patrick Power, Vice President Business Development & Corporate Strategy at Aerogen and Co-Chief Executive of WLA Health & Care AG, said the collaboration combines Aerogen’s experience in human healthcare with WLA’s understanding of the equine sector.

Two mask options

Owners can choose between two masks:

  • Cordura® SoftFit: designed for training and everyday stable use, using material certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100.
  • PE PureFit: an easy-to-clean option containing an antibacterial additive.
