Willem Greve Shines in Gothenburg as Whitaker Rides into Top Ten
The penultimate leg of the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ 2025/2026 Western European League brought drama, intensity, and a showcase of equestrian talent to Gothenburg’s iconic Scandinavium arena. While Dutch star Willem Greve made headlines with his third victory of the season, British legend John Whitaker ensured the Union Jack was flying high with a determined ninth-place finish aboard Equine America Unick du Francport.
For UK fans, Whitaker’s performance was a highlight. Navigating Peter Schumacher’s challenging course, Whitaker and his seasoned gelding demonstrated trademark precision and composure, securing a top ten result amidst a field packed with the world’s leading combinations. His long-standing commitment, excellence in the saddle, and consistent presence at this level continue to inspire both established and aspiring British riders alike.
At the sharp end of the leaderboard, it was the Netherlands’ Willem Greve who stole the show. Riding the experienced Grandorado TN N.O.P., Greve produced a flawless jump-off round, stopping the clock at 42.19 seconds to clinch his third World Cup win of the campaign. The Dutch contingent celebrated a one-two finish, with Kim Emmen and Imagine N.O.P. taking the runner-up spot, while home favourite Malin Baryard-Johnsson delighted Swedish fans with third on H&M Indiana.
Greve was quick to credit his equine partner:
“I’m over the moon for my horse. Grandorado has been a great horse for many years, and he deserves to have this win. This one is for him.”
He also paid tribute to the unique energy of the Scandinavium crowd:
“The Swedish public are horse people… it gives you a little bit extra in the ring. This show is a classic, with crowds that are here for the love of horses. That’s what makes it so special.”
