Head of External Welfare at Bransby Horses, Ryan Rouse, has been honored with the HAPPA Ken Cranage Award for Services to Equine Welfare.

The Ball, held on Saturday 6th April was hosted by The Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA). Ryan was named winner of the special award, for Services to Equine Welfare. The award was created in memory of Ken Cranage, who was the well-respected President of HAPPA.

Ken Cranage was passionate about equine welfare having served HAPPA since retiring from West Yorkshire Mounted Section in the 1980’s. Ken played an active role as HAPPA’s Chief Field Officer and spent a great deal of time leading the field in equine welfare, where he engaged in the development of HAPPA’s welfare strategy that still exists today.

The nominator stated in their submission of Ryan for the award: “Ryan has dedicated ten years to equine welfare and has gone over and above the call of duty to help equines who have been abandoned, neglected and badly treated, working well over the hours that he is employed for.”

On receiving the award, Ryan said

This is amazing, I am so honoured to have received this incredible award and to have been acknowledged like this. This award isn’t just for me, it’s for the whole team who work with me at Bransby Horses as it does really take a very passionate, committed group to do the work we do. Every horse, pony, donkey or mule we rescue, rehabilitate and rehome is a success story and we hope to be doing this important work for many more years to come.”

HAPPA Chief Officer, Sarah Arthur, says of the award “

The HAPPA Board of Trustees and staff wanted a lasting legacy and tribute to our fantastic President Mr Ken Cranage. In doing so we chose to recognise those people who really make a significant contribution to the welfare of equines, just as Ken did. The award, open to all our associates and peers within the industry, is one of a kind and we are proud of all that Ken achieved in the name of HAPPA and equines. We were absolutely delighted to announce Ryan as our first winner of this Award and look forward to our continued relationship with the team at Bransby Horses”.
