Weather Emergency Declared Ahead of the FEI World Equestrian Games
A state of emergency has been declared by North Carolina State, the state hosting the World Equestrian Games (WEG), as a hurricane approaches.
Storm Florence has already been upgraded from tropical storm to hurricane status over the past day. The upgraded status of the storm was a measure put in place by the North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper, as the storm is forecast to gain in strength.
Cooper explained;
While it’s still too early to know the storm’s path, we know we have to be prepared. Action today can avoid losses due to Florence.”
State emergency management are currently working with their local and federal equivalents to prepare the state for the impact of Storm Florence.
Yesterday (9thSeptember), the storm was recorded to be 1,400 miles from the east coast and the “powerful storm” is likely to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the US.
Senior Meteorologist at CNN, Dave Hennen, has suggested computer models are predicting that the storm will hit both North and South Carolina.
The National Hurricane Centre has also added that Storm Florence will be an “extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane” as it moves toward the US.
Tyron International Equestrian Centre, the WEH host centre, has reminded fans and spectators that the storm is set inland and effects of the forecast may be minimal.
The centre issued a statement;
All systems are GO for the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tyron this week! The National Weather Service is providing updates multiple times a day. It’s too soon to tell where Flo will go, but the good news is we’re located far west and inland!”
