Tight at the Top for FEI Prix St Georges at Somerford Park
FEI Prix St Georges at Somerford Park, Sunday May 29
It was tight at the top for riders of the FEI Prix St Georges at Somerford Park Premier League dressage today, with less than 1% between the top three placings.
Gareth Hughes took the top spot riding nine-year-old Cleopatra II finishing with a score of 70.53%. It was Warwickshire based Hughes’ debut ride on board the KWPN mare this May bank holiday weekend, who is owned by Judy Firmston-Williams.
Finishing a very close second, on 70.39%, was Bryony Goodwin riding 10-year-old Hawtins Floriana. Goodwin, who finished on a higher collective than Hughes, rode a beautiful round keeping Hughes on the edge of his seat from an early lead.
The first real threat to Hughes’ reign came from Emma Kanerva, riding Riverbank Sanrose, who finished on 70.9%. Both Hughes and Kanerva kept the top two spots until Goodwin entered, close to the end of the class, to shake up the top three placings.
The leaderboard remained close throughout with riders such as British favourite Becky Moody riding Santa Tropez finishing in 7th on 69.47% and international dressage rider Emile Faurie in 8th riding Rascaja on 68.25.
