RSPCA find a real Black Beauty!

A beautiful black horse called Prince who was rescued by the RSPCA, after he suffered a severe leg injury, is looking for a very special five star home.

This majestic horse, named Prince by his grooms, is the pride of the paddocks at RSPCA Lockwood, but, like Black Beauty from the famous children’s book, his life has not always been so easy.

The black Arab type gelding, who stands at 15.1hh high, came into RSPCA care in December after it was found running free, suffering with a horrific leg injury that was so severe, it exposed parts of his tendon.

Leg injuries can be particularly dangerous for horses but the vet managed to successfully treat the awful wound and now Prince is healed and looking for a home.

Prince was understandably very unsure of people and in particular the vet. But staff at the centre which rehabilitates and rehomes horses, ponies and donkeys, took the nervous nag by the hoof and transformed him into a handsome Prince.

Vix Ford, centre manager at RSPCA Lockwood said: “It’s taken several months for us to find the sparkle deep down in Prince because of his terrible start in life, but with gentle care and patience from his royal servants (our grooms!) we couldn’t be more proud of this stunning young man!

“Although his leg has healed remarkably well, it has taken a long time to build Prince’s trust and confidence. We are now looking for a five star home for this very special horse. We are looking for someone who is prepared to give Prince all the time he needs to continue trusting people again, and someone that can manage a horse of his breeding, and temperament. However, he is a very loving, playful and special horse who comes trotting over to us in the field, and loves to be groomed and fussed. What Prince doesn’t!

Vix added: “We’d love to hear from any royal servants out there who think they could offer the perfect palace for this Prince. They can give us a call on 0300 123 0720 for a chat. Prince would be an ideal project for the right person and with his fantastic paces, he could potentially be a winner in the show ring.”

From foals suffering neglect to older horses cruelly treated or abandoned, as the country’s biggest animal welfare charity we have seen an enormous increase in the number of horses we have taken in, with more than 780 horses in our care right now.
