If you own a horse, chances are, you’ll have more than one rug for any given weather condition. Buying clothing for horses online can be difficult enough without having the responsibility of choosing the right type of rug. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up a few stable rugs suitable for layering up, or for use on their own to help give you more flexibility when selecting which rug to put on.
Care and consideration must be given when choosing to layer rugs. Breathability and overheating are concerns. Each rug, for example, won’t be as breathable as it’s been designed to be when used in a layer. For this reason, it’s advisable to change rugs regularly, making sure you give your horse’s natural winter coat time to breathe.
Take care with material types, as some are more prone to slipping than others. When in doubt opt for an elasticated surcingle (as pictured below) to help keep the rug secure.
100g fill – Horseware Amigo 100g Lightweight
If you are looking for a rug you can choose to use when the weather is a little warmer and a rug ideal to use under another rug, the 100g fill Horseware Amigo Standard Neck Insulator is an excellent choice.
With a 210 denier ripstop outer, low placed surcingles and options for a neck piece, this is a good choice when it comes to a rug for layering. Under the tail there’s a fillet string so there’ll be no excess straps to undo either. Due to the material, it may be best placed on top of a rug.
