Independent equestrian brand Canter & Craft has been named a finalist in two categories at the national Small Business Awards, just months after launching in July 2026.

The business is shortlisted for Best Equestrian Business and Best Pet Business, having started with a DIY Neckrope Kit that allows horse owners to choose their colours and make a piece for their horse.

Founder Libby combined her love of horses with a passion for creating, although she initially questioned whether her first kits would find an audience. Since then, the brand says its products have reached riders around the world, attracting interest from happy hackers, pony-owning families and competitive riders.

“When I launched Canter & Craft, I had this idea that I absolutely loved, but there was always that little voice wondering whether anybody else would love it too,” said Libby. “To be a finalist for both awards just a few months later is something I don’t think I’ll ever forget.”

The kits encourage customers to get involved in making their own equestrian accessories. For Libby, seeing photographs of horses wearing their owners’ creations has been a particularly rewarding part of the business.

“Every time somebody tags us in their creation or sends us a photograph, I still get excited. There’s a real horse at the other end of every order, and somebody has chosen to spend their time making something especially for them.”

A growing brand ambassador team has also become a community where riders exchange ideas, share achievements and support one another. Libby says this sense of connection was an unexpected outcome of launching the business.

Canter & Craft is now developing further DIY kits and equestrian products, with details yet to be announced. As the range expands, the founder says horse welfare and horse-and-rider safety will remain central to the brand, alongside plans to encourage conversations about these issues within the equestrian community.
