Ben Maher and Scott Brash ride head to head for LGCT London

LGCT London preview, 2021

Two of Great Britain’s most talented and celebrated riders, Ben Maher MBE and Scott Brash MBE, are set to go head to head this weekend as the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) London gets underway.

Not only are our home riders incredibly talented, both have enjoyed considerable success on the LGCT circuit, with Maher (38) having won eight LGCT Grand Prix titles, and Brash (35) on a whopping 13! Brash being the only rider to have won the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping in 2015, after three consecutive victories.

London’s leg marks the 9th round of the 2021 Tour, which will again be held within the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, on 13-15 August.

Hot from Tokyo, both Maher and Brash will meet fierce competition from fellow Olympians Holly Smith and Harry Charles and international superstars Peder Fredricson, Laura Kraut, Henrik von Eckermann and Pieter Devos.

Historically, the LGCT London leg has seen five British winners in the six times it has been held, and with this year’s 5* line up featuring no less than three of the Whitaker’s (Ellen, Robert and John), alongside Guy Williams and speed queen Laura Renwick, the scene is set for a fantastic showcase of speed, agility and power with the hope once again of a home win.

Keeping the pressure on, the top four ranking contenders in the LGCT Championship race will also be present in London this weekend. The current overall ranking leader Sergio Alvarez Moya will be looking to capitalise on his tally of 158 points and is certainly a strong contender this weekend.

Edwina Tops-Alexander sits in a close second place with 152 points while their closest rivals will be Gold medalists, straight from their success at the Olympics Fredricson and Maher on 149 and 132 points respectively.

The UK has a strong equestrian community with millions of people riding and following the top British show jumpers as they compete worldwide. The London event on the LGCT calendar features a little over halfway through this season’s calendar. The final event will be held from 18-21 November in Prague.
