Steph Gumn – 2017 Already a Rollercoaster of a Ride
Sponsored riders blog – Steph Gumn, February 2017
So, 2017 is here and its already been a rollercoaster! I had a lovely Christmas and New Year with a yard full of lovely clients horses.
Sadly, Alvin my chestnut gelding, enjoyed his last few days galloping round the field and eating far too much before being put to sleep due to his wobblers diagnosis. I will miss him everyday, but I couldn’t watch him suffer in pain anymore.
Since then things seem to have picked up a little. I have picked up a few rides alongside my competition livery, Ted. I have also purchased a new horse who I hope to keep and produce for this years age classes with a plan to keep him long term to get me back on track with my competing after a slow past 12 months.
The yard has taken a small change in direction focusing now more on competition liveries and full livery over schooling liveries. I have started my year on the young professionals program and already attended a biomechanics lecture day. This was fantastic and added lots of new information which I can use when training the horses each day. I can’t wait for the rest of the course, I have both ridden training and I will also be completing my AI technician qualification.
All of this should come in handy as I have also purchased a broodmare for this year. Her name is Ruby and is now retired from competition but back in her day she had a successful competition record up to 1.30m level. She is beautifully bred and has the most loving temperament so I think she will make a wonderful mom. I have an idea of a stallion for this year but as always with horses it might change last minute.
Overall, I’m looking forward to seeing what February brings.
Hope 2017 has started well for you all!
