Large dog terrorizes pony and rider in three-mile chase

A pony and rider were chased by a large dog, thought to be a Rottweiler, for three miles on Thursday 19th May. The traumatic incident took place in the Gattonside area, near the river Tweed, where the women was exercising her young pony. The animal broke away from its owner and gave chase, the women who feared the dog would attack her pony, galloped towards Gattonside mains farm in an effort to shake her pursuer. The relentless chase went on for several miles before finally losing sight of the hound.

Inspector John Scott, based at Kelso police station, said: “This was a frightening experience for someone to go through and dog owners must be aware of their responsibilities when taking their pets into rural areas.

“The chase began in a spot particularly popular with walkers as well as dog owners and I would be interested to speak with anyone who was in the area around this time.

“I also urge the owner of this dog to contact police as soon as possible.”
