Cue Card Set for Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup has been confirmed as the race which eight-time Grade One winner Cue Card will run in at the Cheltenham Festival next month after connections scrapped him from the latest entries for the Ryanair Chase which is run over the shorter trip of 2m5f a day earlier.

Cue Card will be running in the second Gold Cup of his career as he also lined up in the Blue Riband event of the meeting 12 months ago where he was on course to become the first horse win the Chase Triple Crown £1 million bonus after success in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and the King George VI Chase at Kempton. Unfortunately for his connections, he came down at Cheltenham at the third last fence when travelling well in the race won by Don Cossack.

Colin Tizzard’s runner made a disappointing start to his campaign this season as he could only finish third in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby back in November. A month later though, he was back to his best as he defended his crown in the Betfair Chase in Lancashire, beating former Gold Cup winner Coneygree.

Cue Card took on his stablestar Thistlecrack in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day but had no answer for the younger horse who beat him by over three lengths in a dominant performance to establish himself as the Gold Cup favourite.

As you can see on the Oddschecker Cheltenham Festival page, the best price Cue Card is available at for the Gold Cup on the back of news of is withdrawal from the Ryanair Chase is 8/1. He was as big as 16/1 for the race before the King George as there were doubts about whether he would take on Thistlecrack again this season but it now appears connections are happy to have another go.

Cue Card’s owner Jean Bishop could still have an entry in the Ryanair Chase this year as Royal Vacation may carry her silks in the race. The seven-year-old was a surprise 33/1 winner of the Grade One Kauto Star Novices’ Chase on Boxing Day where he prevailed by 12 lengths. He followed that up with success at Cheltenham last month. The novice chaser has also an entry in the RSA Chase though over the slightly longer trip of 3m on the same day.

With Thistlecrack, Native River and Cue Card all representing him on the day, Tizzard has the top three runners in the betting as he bids to win his maiden Gold Cup crown this year.
