Burgham Welcomes Back Popular Showjumping Classes

Burgham International Horse Trials (27 – 30 July), Northumberland’s premier eventing competition, each year boats a fantastic range of showjumping classes alongside the horse trials.

This year there will be a variety of classes available on the Saturday and Sunday (29-30 July). British Showjumping classes will include British Novice up to a 1.30m open in the Natural Flake Arena, sponsored by AW Jenkinson Forest Products.

There will be a feature class in the International Arena on both days. On Saturday 29 July the highlight will be the Burgham Classic 1.40m Grand Prix, with £3,000 prize-money and £1,000 on offer to the winner. Yorkshire’s Paul Barker took the spoils in 2016, and it is sure to attract top riders once more.

On Sunday 30 July, the Burgham Owen Pugh 1.05m Grand Final will take centre stage. This is the culmination of a series of qualifiers at shows within a 150-mile radius of Burgham; the top two in each qualifier will jump in the semi-final on Sunday morning, and the top 25 from the semi-final will qualify for the Grand Final later that day. The prize-fund is £900, with £300 to the winner. A list of qualifying shows can be found on the website at www.burghamhorsetrials.co.uk.

Chris Jopling, showjumping organiser for Burgham, said: “I’m delighted that British Showjumping classes will once again be showcased at the July event. Showjumpers have few opportunities to compete on grass these days and the groundwork team work extremely hard to provide first-class going each year.

“The introduction of the £1,000-to-the-winner Grand Prix last year was extremely well received by the North’s top showjumpers and the Burgham 1.05m series was such a great success that the number of shows asking to hold qualifiers this year has more than doubled. We are also lucky that Di Boddy will be designing all the showjumping tracks at Burgham this year, so we can again expect top-class competition.”

Showjumping entries must be made in advance online via www.equoevents.co.uk. The closing date is 5pm on Monday 24 July. Entry queries should be referred to the showjumping entries secretary Janice Mewse; email mail@jmequestrian.co.uk, tel: 07906468450.
