Ascot Favourites – The Big Five

There’s been much talk of the top five Ascot favourites on the lead up to the event, bookies claiming they are living in fear of the Ascot acca (The acca currently stands at just over 18/1). Of the five favourites, it is Winter that has been the horse that has seen most support in their respective markets, and by some distance.

Winter runs in the Coronation Stakes on Friday and absolutely dominates the betting. Once springing a surprise in the 1000 Guineas Stakes at the start of last month, she followed up that win with a triumph in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and punters clearly consider her the banker of the festival. The daughter of Galileo is a best price of just 8/13 and accounts for a whopping 70.8% of all bets placed through our site on the market this month.

Of the five favourites, the next most backed is Ribchester in the Queen Anne Stakes, currently 10/11. Off the back of a masterful win at Newbury last month in the Lockinge stakes, 50.9% of bets this month have been on the 125 rated horse, more than the rest of the field combined.

Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup holds 45.3% of bets. Described by Aidan O’Brien as the fastest horse he’s ever had, the horse that won the Coventry Stakes at Ascot last year is priced at 5/4 to make it six wins out of six.

As for the least fancied favourite, we look to the main event of the festival. A recent win at Leopardstown doesn’t seem to have punters all that excited about the chances of Order of St George. Last year’s winner of the race has just less than a third – 29.3% – of bets on the Ascot Gold Cup this month, which is a modest share compared to the other big guns.

Oddschecker spokesman: “The bookmakers fared much better at Cheltenham this year compared to 2016, and also had a nice little boost earlier in the month with the General Election result. However, if these five horses all get up at Ascot, it could be a long summer for some firms.”
