A Day in the Life of Tarzan

As Alltech continue their support of pony, Tarzan throughout 2017, here we find out about a typical day in his life at Penny Farm, the World Horse Welfare Rescue and Rehoming Centre where he is receiving much needed rehabilitation.

Road signs will be no problem for Tarzan in his future home.

Tarzan is loving life at Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre, having celebrated his one year anniversary of being in the care of World Horse Welfare.

When he was found abandoned by World Horse Welfare Field Officer, Sarah Tucker, in Northumberland, he was severely underweight and frightened as a result of the mistreatment he had received.

Tarzan has developed a strong bond with his assigned groom, Katie Grimshaw, learning to trust humans and growing in confidence every day.

Here Katie tells us about a typical day in the life of Tarzan as he continues his journey to one day finding his forever home.

“As Tarzan enjoys the luxury of living out in a large field with his friends, I usually bring him up to the yard at about 8am, to give him a good groom. Regular handling is so important to maintain our bond and prepare him for life beyond Penny Farm. This also allows me to monitor his health and check for any injuries he might have sustained out in the field.

“Twice a week he will undergo more extensive rehabilitation work, which for Tarzan involves some in-hand work on the ground and confidence building exercises. As Tarzan was very weak and nervous when he first arrived and due to his young age, his workload has been designed not to be too intensive.

“Tarzan’s daily routine is so important in preparation for re-homing, to ensure he is good to handle. Once I have finished grooming him and he has completed his training, I will turn him back out into the field, unless it is a day when we are open to the public and then he will stay on the yard to meet visitors.

“Meeting different members of the public also helps get Tarzan used to lots of different people, ready for the day when he goes out into the big wide world.”
